There are people you photograph because they're famous.

Then there are people you photograph who leave you feeling fortunate to have spent time in their company.

Monty Roberts was one of those people.

I had the privilege of photographing Monty at his home, Flag Is Up Farms, documenting the remarkable relationship he shared with horses. Watching him work wasn't about seeing a "horse whisperer" perform tricks—it was witnessing decades of patience, observation, trust, and respect translated into a language that both horse and human could understand.

What struck me most wasn't just his extraordinary skill.

It was his humility.

Even at 91 years old, Monty was still working with horses in the round pen, moving with a determination that would challenge people decades younger. Anyone who has spent time around horses knows how physically demanding they can be. Yet Monty approached every session with quiet confidence and an energy that seemed to come from his genuine love for the animals rather than from any desire to impress.

After our shoot, I wanted to personally thank him by gifting him one of my favorite photographs from the day.

At the last minute, my sister and a friend joined me, and despite the unexpected visit, Monty and his wife, Pat, couldn't have been more welcoming. They invited us in, spent time with us, and made us feel like old friends rather than visitors dropping by unannounced.

Those are the moments I remember most.

Not the fame.

Not the books.

Not the television appearances.

Just two genuinely kind people who treated everyone with warmth and generosity.

One of my favorite photographs from that visit is of Monty holding the signed print I had made for him. Seeing him smile while holding an image we had created together remains one of those memories that reminds me why I became a photographer in the first place. Photographs aren't simply about preserving moments—they become part of the stories we carry for the rest of our lives.

Monty's influence reached far beyond the equestrian world. He changed the conversation about how humans communicate with horses, proving that understanding and trust could achieve far more than fear and force. His methods inspired countless trainers and horse owners around the globe, and his legacy will continue every time someone chooses patience over intimidation.
